Took a little trip today, with a group of paddlers from Virginia Tech. We were originally going to paddle Ashville Bridge Creek, put there was no parking at Lotus Pond so we headed to Horn Point and opted for a cross bay trip to Mill Creek.
The wind was just a little more then we would have wanted, but it was refreshing. The water level was up, a little higher then normal, opening up the entire Mill Creek marsh. Inside the marsh, we saw mostly Red Winged Black Birds, as well as an a few Osprey and Egrets overhead. There appeared to be very little activity in any of the three Osprey nests, but that could be that this is around the time that the Osprey eggs would be hatching, and I guess if they have already hatched there would be a lot me activity to feed the young.
A lot of aquatic plant life growing, to the point it seemed that it may be choking anything underwater, but we saw plenty of activity just under the surface.
On the trip back, the group was given a first for most, when we spotted a Water Moccasin swimming in the open water.
