Kayaking with Kay - Ashville Bridge Creek

Since I thought that today's weather was going to be bad, I wasn't really planning on going kayaking today, but as it cleared and the thunderstorm potential dropped, I realize there was an opportunity to get on the water. I checked with Kay, and she was up for a short kayak trip, so I loaded up the the kayaks and we headed back to Ashville Bridge Creek. The South winds brought the water level up about 4 to 6 inches, which allows you to keep the kayak right up to the edge of the creek, and enjoy the interface of creek and marsh.

Today I saw first dragonflies of the season, not many, but enough to make their presence known. The frogs were abundant in the reeds, and singing away. The Gar were pretty much everywhere along the way, trying to get at what ever they could in the reeds. I enjoy watching the Gar this time of year, if you get the kayak up moving, and then just coast for a while along the edge of the marshes, they usually don't notice you until you are right on top of them. Sometimes they scatter and other times they act like your kayak going over them is a totally normal occurrence.

After getting a fly over by a large Military helicopter, we took a left into on of the wider drainage ditches, to look for turtles, Kay loves her turtles. We saw no turtles, but Kay the eagle eye spots a small snake sunning on a downed branch (She says cottonmouth, I say water snake), but what she missed right behind her was the large (3 inch diameter) snake wrapped around the tree.

Being that it was Kay's first trip since last summer, we decided to head for home.

Yesterday, I picked up all the trash I saw and could reach, today added another 12 bottles and cans, and a bucket, I guess the rise in water level moved them around enough to get to.
